Group Pastoral Dogs (KC)

Origin / History Originated in South Wales where they were used to herd livestock by "heeling" which is where they nip at cows feet as there method of moving them. They were also used to guard cattle and ponies.

They are a very old breed which date back to at least the Dark Ages. Very similar to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, they were spilt into separate breeds in 1934.

Appearance Broad flat head with foxy like appearance and long muzzle and large prick ears. They have fairy long deep chested body with well sprung ribs. The neck is fairly long and strong. Short strong boned legs with oval feet.

Colours Solid red, reddish brown, sable, fawn.

Temperament Strong minded, lively, active, intelligent, affectionate

Height and Weight 25 - 30cm in height and 9 - 12 Kg in weight. Males and females are generally very similar in size. As gets older has a tenancy to put on weight, but its important it doesn't become overweight because this puts strain on its back.

Common Health Problems An alround healthy breed. With short legs and and long back they are susceptible to back problems. Known inherited condition included hip malformation and von Willebrands disease. Sometimes suffer eyes problem such as progressive retinal atrophy.

Living Conditions Ideally suited to country life. Will do fine in a town as long as with a property with garden and a nearby park.

Exercise Requirements As a working breed will need a fair amount of exercise, so at least one good daily walk. they'll enjoy a good off lead run at the park.

Training Requirements An intelligent working breed which is fairly easy to train using firm leadership with reward based training methods. The breed is known to have done well in obedience, agility and herding trial.

Watch out for any nipping of ankles during puppy hood and make sure it is discouraged. This is just its breed instincts from its livestock "heeling" days coming through.

Life Expectancy 12 - 15 years.

Grooming Coat is moderately long and is dense. Just needs weekly brush to remove dead hairs and skin. Moult's twice a year and will need daily brushing during the moult times.

Famous Examples Favourite dog breed of the British royal family. The Queen is often seen with her Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

CompleteDogsGuide Comment They say this a big dog in a small dogs body so is the perfect breed for any owner who loves big dogs, but doesn't have the room for them. They are active dogs who do best with active owners and families.
