Origin /
History The Grand Basset Vendéen has its roots from 16th-century France. It originated from the French west countryside and it is also known as one of the 4 breeds from the La Vendée region. The four breeds, which all feature rough coats, are the Briquet, the Grand Griffon Vendéen, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen, and finally, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. These breeds may have possibly descended from the Gris de St. Louis Vendéen hounds.
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is believed to to have been bred from coarse-haired Italian dogs and the white Southern Hound. The name of this dog was taken from the original breeders. The King's clerk or greffier was one of the first, and perhaps this was why the dog was partly called a Griffon.
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen was a special breed that was even presented to the King. The French Revolution, however, was particularly difficult on the breed, and extinction of this dog type was almost met. Fortunately, in 1907, there was a club that gradually restored the population of this Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen in the country.
A pet and an occasional hunting dog, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen makes for the ideal companion.
