Group Pastoral Dogs (KC)
Origin /
History Ancestors of Anatolian Shepherds are said to have migrated to Turkey in 1000 A.D. There are theories, though, that this breed has been in existence 6,000 years ago. There are many variations of this dog and they were once known collectively as shepherd dogs. These dogs were used for guarding flocks and until now, they still have that protective instinct about them.
Since there were many regional variations of shepherd dogs, western breeders decided to create standards for these breeds in 1970. It was only during 1999, though, that the breed gained recognition from the American Kennel Club.
Appearance Anatolian Shepherds are large dogs that bear similarity to the Kuvasz and the Great Pyrenees. However, Anatolian Shepherds are more agile and slender. They have large heads that are proportional to the rest of their bodies. These dogs sport serious expressions but are always alert. They have smooth coats with thick undercoats.
Colours Anatolian Shepherds can come in a wide variety of colors. These colors include red, sable, brindle, fawn, and white. Sometimes, Anatolian Shepherds can also sport black ears and masks.
Temperament Anatolian Shepherds get along well with other pets that they were raised with. They are affectionate towards their own family, but they are wary of strangers. Strangers should be introduced to the Anatolian Shepherd first so that it won't be suspicious of that person anymore. These dogs can be stubborn and dominant, and very protective of their family's property. They are very alert, possessive, and loyal. These dogs are courageous and would not hesitate to respond if it feels that it is being challenged. Anatolian Shepherds are independent thinkers and owners shouldn't be surprised if their dog does not obey their every command. These dogs can get along well with children, but it's best if those children are older and considerate.
Height and
Weight Male Anatolian Shepherds are usually taller and heavier than female ones. They range between 69 to 81 cm in height and 36-68 Kg in weight.
Common Health
Problems Dogs of this breed may be sensitive to various chemicals and medications. Some common health problems that have plagued Anatolian Shepherds are hypothyroidism and eyelid entropion. Cases of hip dysplasia have also occurred, although not as often as this happens to other large breeds.
Living Conditions Anatolian Shepherds will be inactive when kept indoors, which is why they are not recommended for living inside apartments. They must be kept outdoors, preferably inside a fenced-in, large yard where they can run around and get plenty much needed doses of activity.
Exercise
Requirements Anatolian Shepherds need plenty of exercise. They should be kept in a fenced-in environment wherein they can run freely. Aside from that, though, owners of Anatolian Shepherd should also take their dog for long walks daily.
Training Requirements Training an Anatolian Shepherd must start while the dog is still young since this breed can be quite stubborn and independent. Adult Anatolian Shepherds will be hard to train because they are already accustomed to following their own ways. Firm training is needed and although Anatolian Shepherds are easy to train, training is better done by an experienced trainer.
Motivational training methods should be used and these methods should be demonstrated through a consistent, lovable, and determined approach. They like to be treated with affection and they can be sensitive to reprimands.
Life Expectancy The Anatolian Shepherd can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.
Grooming The Anatolian Shepherd is a heavy shedder, but its shedder happens seasonally. At the time when it is shedding, the owner must make certain to brush the Anatolian Shepherd's coat thoroughly. During the times when the Anatolian Shepherd is not shedding, however, brushing its coat just once a week will do just fine. All in all, the Anatolian Shepherd is a low maintenance dog.
