General Breed Information
Originally, Telomians were wild dogs that were prevalent near the Telom River in Malaysia. These dogs were used by the Orang Asli, who were Malaysian Aboriginal people, for hunting small animals and catching fish. Aside from being an excellent hunter, the Telomian is also a skillful climber and a great guard dog. In 1963, these dogs were discovered by Dr. Orville Elliot, who is an anthropologist. These dogs were then imported to the United States, where they were highly valued. This breed can also be found in several European countries, where they serve as family companions. In their native land, however, the Telomian isn't appreciated, and many specimens of this breed that were brought out of the wild are now stray dogs.
The Telomian stands at 15 to 19 inches tall and weighs approximately 18 to 30 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a robust body with a broad and deep chest. These dogs have a wedge-shaped and elongated head with a muzzle that is long and narrow and a nose that is black in colour. Their eyes are dark and almond-shaped. Telomians have broad, short ears that are set low, and their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. The forelegs of these dogs is straight with perpendicular pasterns. Their coat is soft, smooth, and short. The acceptable coat colours are shades of brown or sable. They may also have white markings on their feet and chest, and they can also have a black mask.
