General Breed Information
The Styrian Roughhaired Mountain Hound, which is also sometimes called as the Peintinger Bracke or Steirischer Rauhaarige Hochgebirgsbrack, is a dog breed that has been existing in Austria for more than a hundred years. It is believed that Karl Peintinger is the developer of this breed. Peintinger crossed a coarse-haired male Istrian Hound with a female Hanoverian Scenthound to create the Styrian Roughhaired Mountain Hound. He then used selective breeding to develop the breed further. Today, these dogs are mainly used for tracking.
The Styrian Roughhaired Mountain Hound is moderately sized, with a height that ranges from 17 1/2 to 23 inches and a weight that is approximately 40 pounds. Dogs of this breed have brown eyes that have a serious expression. Their muzzle and teeth are very strong. The back of these dogs is straight and quite broad, and their tail is medium length and carried upwards. They have muscular hindquarters. The coat of these dogs is short, coarse, and matte. The acceptable coat colours for this breed are shades of yellow and red. They may also have a white marking on their chest area.
