General Breed Information

The St. Germain Pointing Dog was created during the 1830s using French pointers that were descendants of the royal packs of King Louis XV. These French Pointers were crossed with English Pointers that were brought to France by Mr. de Girardin, who is a huntsman working for King Charles X. The crossbred dogs were developed by the keepers of the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest, from which the breed got its name. St. Germain Pointing Dogs were common during the early years of the 20th century, but they are now fairly rare.

Male dogs of this breed have a height that ranges from 19.7 to 24.4 inches, while females have a height that falls between 21 and 23 inches. The weight of these dogs is 40 to 57 pounds. St. Germain Pointing Dogs have a finely chiseled head with a broad skull and a prominent occipital peak. They have a long nose bridge that may be either slightly domed or straight. Their lips are thin and pink in colour, and they have a wide, dark pink nose. The pendulous ears of this breed are supple, and their eyes are fairly large and are golden yellow in colour. They have a well-proportioned body with a deep, broad chest. Their loins are slightly arched, fairly short, and powerful. The tail of these dogs is thick at the base and thin at the tip. Their coat is short and not too fine, and is dull white in colour with bright orange spots.
