General Breed Information

The Spaniel de Pont Audemer is a dog breed that was developed in the Pont Audemer region in France during the 19th century. Dogs of this breed are believed to be descendants of a breed that is native to Pont Audemer. The Barbet and the Picardy Spaniel are also thought to have contributed to the development of this breed. These dogs were not numerous to begin with, so after the Second World War, these dogs were crossed with Irish Water Spaniels so that the breed would be revived. Today, these dogs are still small in number, and they are in danger of becoming extinct.

The Spaniel de Pont Audemer has a height that ranges from 20 1/2 to 23 inches and a weight of approximately 44 pounds. They have a slender head with a round skull. They have a long nose bridge and a brown nose. Their ears are flat, long, and are set relatively low on top of their head. These dogs have fairly small eyes that may either be hazel or dark amber in colour. They have a slightly domed or straight back, and their croup is slightly sloping. The tail of these dogs is carried in a fairly straight way and is usually docked to just one third of its length. When left naturally, their tail should be slightly curved and medium in length. Their coat is slightly rough, curly, and very dense. The acceptable coat colour is brown, preferably mottled with grey and brown.
