General Breed Information

Siberian Laikas pertain to the East Siberian Laika and the West Siberian Laika. These two breeds were established as sledding and hunting laikas by the Russian council in 1947. The West Siberian Laika was bred by Mansi and Khantu hunters across the giant upper Ir-tysh River basin located in the eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains. The East Siberian Laika only has a temporary standard. Due to the vast territory where these dogs are used, there is a wide variety of strains and types, each with a slightly differing style of hunting and appearance. East Siberian Laikas are usually tougher and larger than their western counterparts. During the 1980s, breeding programs were started for the East Siberian Laika, with the hope that the skill level of this breed will be improved. Siberian Laikas are usually used for hunting, but they also do well as family companions.

East Siberian Laikas have a height that ranges from 22 to 25 inches and a weight that falls between 40 and 50 pounds. These dogs have a stand-off, short coat that is usually black piebald or black in colour. It's also acceptable for these dogs to have a white or tan coat. The West Siberian Laika, on the other hand, is 21 to 24 inches high and 40 to 50 pounds heavy. Their coat is also short and stand-off, but their coat colours can be either solid or piebald in shades of red, black, gray, white, or tan.
