General Breed Information

The Russian Harlequin Hound is a dog breed that was developed in Russia during the late 19th century. This breed was formed by crossing the English Foxhound with the Russian Hound. At first, the resulting breed was called the Anglo-Russian, but in 1951, the name was changed to the Russian Harlequin Hound. Today, dogs of this breed are being improved in uniformity and type. These dogs are used for hunting wolves.

Russian Harlequin Hounds have a height of 22 to 27 inches and a weight of approximately 40 to 70 pounds. These dogs have a medium-sized, powerful body with a deep and broad chest. Their head is strong, with a medium-sized muzzle and dark-coloured, obliquely set eyes. Their triangular ears are small, and their nose is black in colour. These dogs have a strong, short, thick, and round neck. They also have well-muscled, strong legs, and feet that are strong and oval-shaped. The tail of these dogs is short and strong at the root. Russian Harlequin Hounds have a short coat that is very dense. The acceptable coat colours for this breed are red and yellow, with some specimens having a black saddle as well as small white markings.
