General Breed Information

In the 1950s, Oswaldo Aranha Filho started a breeding program with the purpose of creating a dog breed that is capable of hunting wild boars and jaguars. The primary basis for this breed is the American Foxhound, although other breeds such as the Bluetick Coonhound, Petit Bleu de Gascogne, Black and Tan Coonhound, Deutscher Schäferhund, Veadeiro Pampeano, and Treeing Walker Coonhound may have also been used. Selective breeding was done for approximately 13 years before the Rastreador Brasileiro was sufficiently purebred. This breed has been granted official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Today, the Rastreador Brasileiro is very rare.

The Rastreador Brasileiro has a height of 25 to 27 inches and a weight of 50 to 60 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a strong and straight back with muscular loins. They have straight and strong forelegs, and powerful hind legs with well bent hocks. These dogs have a flat head with a medium-sized muzzle. Their nose is black, and their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. They have a thick, muscular neck that is slightly arched, and their chest is deep and powerful with well-sprung ribs. The feet of these dogs are compact and tight. They also have a short and rough coat that is white or brown, with chestnut, black, or blue markings.
