General Breed Information

The Rampur Greyhound is a dog breed that originated in India. Dogs of this breed were bred by his Royal Highness Ahmed Ali Khan Bahadur by mixing the blood lines of the Tazi and the English Greyhound. From the Tazi, the dog got its character and looks, while the English Greyhound blood gave the dog its speed. When the Maharajahs fell from power in 1947, the Rampur Greyhound's popularity also diminished. During recent years, however, dogs of this breed have been rising in popularity. These dogs are rarely found outside India, and the registered dogs of this breed can only be seen in New Jersey, in the United States of America.

Rampur Greyhounds have a height of 22 to 30 inches and a weight that ranges from 60 to 65 pounds. These dogs are muscular, with a broad head and a flat skull. The nose of these dogs is pointed, and their pendant ears are set high. They have hare-like feet that are large, with heavy webbing. The toes of these dogs are very flexible, and their ability to balance is like that of a cat. The coat of these dogs can be grizzle, brindle, mouse-gray, black, or parti-colour.

These dogs are generally healthy, although they may be susceptible to gastric torsion, osteosarcoma, and esophageal achalasia.
