General Breed Information

The Posavac Hound is a dog breed that originated in Yugoslavia during the 1700s. This breed may have the same origin as other breeds that originated in Yugoslavia, because their ancestors have been introduced to that country through the ports of the Adriatic coast. In 1955, this breed was granted official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, although at that time, this breed was still known as the Kras Posavac Basin Hound.

Posavac Hounds have a height that ranges from 18 to 23 inches and a weight that falls between 38 and 44 pounds. These dogs have a broad chest with moderately sprung ribs. Their body is muscular, with strong forelegs and muscular hind legs. Their hocks are well bent, and they have strong feet with thick, hard pads. The head of these dogs is elongated and they have pendant ears and large eyes. They have a medium-sized muzzle that is well-proportioned to their head and ends in a black nose. The teeth of these dogs meet in either a level or scissors bite. Posavac Hounds have a long tail that is carried curved or straight. The thick coat of these dogs can be short to medium in length and wiry. Acceptable coat colours include varying shades of wheaten and red. They may also have white markings on their paws, head, and chest.

The life span of Posavac Hounds is approximately 12 years.
