General Breed Information

The Petit Gascon-Saintongeois is a smaller version of the Grand Gascon-Saintongeois. The breeds used for the creation of the Grand Gascon-Saintongeois include the Airegeois and various other local Briquet hounds. During the early years of the 20th century, hunters in the southwest of France chose the smallest specimens of the Grand Gascon-Saintongeois to develop the Petit Gascon-Saintongeois. This breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the United Kennel Club.

The Petit Gascon-Saintongeois is approximately 22 to 25 inches high and around 50 to 62 pounds heavy. Dogs of this breed have a broad, powerful back, and a deep chest. They have a narrow and long head, with deep set, dark chestnut eyes. The ears of these dogs are very long and set low, and their muzzle is long and narrow, with a black nose at its tip. These dogs have a slightly arched, medium length neck. Their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. They have straight forelegs that are set well apart, and hind legs that are strong, with well bent hocks and stifles. The feet of these dogs are strong and compact, with hard pads and arched toes. The coat of the Petit Gascon-Saintongeois is thick, short, and smooth. This breed is tricolour; these dogs can have a black head and a few body spots, or tan on the head with black ticking throughout their body.
