General Breed Information

The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is an ancient scenthound that originated in France. Dogs of this breed are descendants of the original scenting dogs of Gaul. They were particularly created from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The breeding program for these dogs was done in Gascony Province, which is an area located on France's southwestern coast. These dogs are usually used for hunting hare. In 1991, this breed was granted official recognition by the United Kennel Club.

The Petit Bleu de Gascogne has a slightly convex, relatively narrow skull with a well-pronounced occiput. Dogs of this breed have a black nose and pendulous lips that cover their lower jaw. Their eyes are somewhat deep and are dark chestnut brown in colour. They have thin ears that are attached very low, and their teeth are strong and meet in a scissors bite. These dogs have a well-developed chest that is broad, long, and deep, and their ribs are medium arched. They have slightly arched, well-muscled loins, and shoulders that are well-muscled. These dogs have strong forelegs, well-muscled thighs, and long, oval feet with firm toes and thick pads. The coat of these dogs is profuse, strong, and weather- resistant. Their coat is white speckled with black, and with irregularly shaped black patches.
