General Breed Information

The Perro Cimarron is the only dog breed that is native to Uruguay. Specimens of this breed have been existing in Uruguay for more than 300 years now. Perro Cimarrons were developed by crossing various breeds that were brought by the Portuguese and Spanish conquerors. The Perro Cimarron is considered the National Dog of Uruguay, and it is a very popular breed in that country. This breed also goes by the name Perro Criollo or Perro Gaucho. In 2006, this breed was officially granted recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Dogs of this breed are used as hunters of wild boar and as guard dogs.

Perro Cimarrons are athletic and tough dogs that are often used in remote ranches located in t he Uruguayan countryside. These dogs are medium-sized, molossian type dogs that are compact and strong. They are well-boned, well-muscled, and agile. These dogs have a double coat, and their outer coat can come in shades of fawn and brindle. Perro Cimarrons can come with or without a mask.
