General Breed Information

The Owczarek Podhalanski, also known as the Tatra Mountain Sheepdog or Polish Mountain Dog, originated in Podhale, a small region in southern Poland. The history of the Owczarek Podhalanski is nearly the same as that of similar dogs from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Romania, all of which are developed from the white guardian dogs in the Eastern World. This breed is an excellent mountain worker. It has been used as a livestock guardian and guard dog. This breed is popular in Poland, and it was introduced to Canada and the United States during the 1980s. One American foreign service officer who was stationed in Poland took a liking to this breed and arranged to get three of these dogs once he was back in the United States. It was because of this that the Polish Tatra Sheepdog Club of America was founded to help promote the breed.

The Owczarek Podhalanski has a height that ranges from 24 to 34 inches and a weight that falls between 66 and 150 pounds. These dogs have a well-proportioned head with a medium length muzzle that tapers to a point. They have triangular ears and dark, slightly oblique eyes. The chest of these dogs is deep and broad, and they have strongly boned, muscular legs. Their feet are round, large, and firm, and they carry their tail low. These dogs have a white coat that is long, thick, hard, and may either be wavy or straight.
