General Breed Information

During the late 1980s, Eddie Harrison gathered several rescue dogs of unknown heritage as foundation for the Northern Inuit Dog. The aim of the breeding program was to create a dog that looks like a wolf but has the gentleness of a domestic dog. The first Northern Inuit Dogs were created by breeding the rescue dogs with Alaskan Malamutes, German Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies. After several years of breeding, the dogs produced became known as the Northern Inuit Dogs, although they do not originate from the north.

Male Northern Inuit Dogs have a height of at least 25 inches, while females have a height of at least 22 inches. These dogs have a powerful build. They are athletic and slightly longer than they are tall. The head of these dogs is not too broad, and their skull is slightly domed. Their muzzle is a little longer than their skull, and they have a black nose. The ears of these dogs are set fairly high and are carried erect. Their teeth meet in a scissors bite, and they have oval eyes that are set at a slightly oblique angle. The coat of these dogs is slightly harsh, and they have a bushy tail. The acceptable coat colours are pure white, grey, sable, and black. They can also have a white face with a dark mask.
