General Breed Information
The Moscow Watchdog is a breed created by Moscow dog fanciers in an attempt to develop a strong, large watchdog that would be more willing to follow orders. The development of this breed started after the Second World War. Breeders made use of the Caucasian Ovtcharka because of its ferocity and wariness, and the Saint Bernard because of its strength, size, and more gentle temperament. In 1985, the breed standard was published in Soviet Russia. The Federation of Dog Breeders of Russia gave their approval for the standard in 1992. In 1997, the Russian Kennel Club also approved the breed standard.
Moscow Watchdogs have a height that ranges from 25 to 27 inches and a weight that falls between 100 and 150 pounds. These dogs are big-boned, with powerful legs and a massive head. These dogs have a plumed tail that is long enough to reach the floor. They have a coat that is thick, with moderate length and fringing. The coat of these dogs is always red and white in colour.
