General Breed Information

The Moscow Vodolaz is a dog breed that originated in Krasnaya Zvezda, Belarus. This breed was created by crossing male Newfoundlands with female Caucasian Ovtcharka and East European Shepherds. The offspring of these dogs were also mated with each other to produce the Moscow Vodolaz. This breed was originally intended to be a water rescue dog, but attempts were unsuccessful because dogs of this breed turned out to be unwilling to save drowning people. Rather, the Moscow Vodolaz was just looking to bite people. This breed is now extinct, but it was among the breeds used for the creation of the Russian Black Terrier.

The Moscow Vodolaz is said to be similar in appearance to the Landseer Newfoundland. The coat of these two dogs are said to have the same pattern, although the black on the Landseer Newfoundland is brown on the Moscow Vodolaz. Due to its extinction, not much information can be found regarding this breed.
