General Breed Information
The Lithuanian Hound is a dog breed that was developed in an attempt to recreate the original-type Curlandish Hound. Lithuanian hunters used local big game hounds with Bloodhounds, Beagles, and Polish Hounds to achieve this breed. Later on, Russian Hounds also became mixed with the breed. During the 1970s, the Lithuanian Hound was decreasing in number, and the 1976-1977 hunting season even lessened their number further because many specimens were killed by boars. The Lithuanian Cytological Council then established a special kennel facility meant to raise Lithuanian Hounds. This breed is usually found only within Lithuania.
The Lithuanian Hound is a sturdy breed that has a height of 21 to 24 inches and a weight of 60 to 75 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a muscular body that is less heavily boned than other hounds. These dogs have a medium-sized head with a medium-sized muzzle. Their nose colour varies according to the colour of their coat. They have ears that are moderate in length and hang close to their cheeks. The teeth of these dogs meet in either a level or scissors bite. These dogs have a strong and long neck, and their chest is broad and long. Lithuanian Hounds have a short, glossy coat that is black with tan markings.
