General Breed Information
The Italian Hound is a descendant of Egyptian scenthounds. It is said that these Egyptian scenthounds were imported to Greece and then to Italy, where they may have been interbred with the Roman Molossus. Images of these hounds can be found in various Renaissance paintings and in ancient statuary. During the late 19th century, the breed began to have different varieties, including the Alpine Hound and the Lomellina Hound, which were used for developing the Italian Hound.
Male dogs of this breed have a height of 20 1/2 to 23 1/2 inches and a weight of 44 to 62 pounds. Females stand at 20 to 23 inches and weigh between 40 and 57 1/2 pounds. Italian Hounds have a long head with a slightly domed skull. Their nose is large and they have a domed nose bridge. The ears of these dogs are flat, triangular, pendulous, and have pointed tips. They have large eyes that are dark ocher in colour. The chest of these dogs is moderately wide, and their loin is well-muscled. Their back is straight and muscular, and they have a well-muscled, level croup. These dogs have a tail that is set high and hangs in a saber style. The coat of these dogs can come in solid fawn, and black and tan. The fawn can range from light fawn to smoky reddish-fawn and may have white markings on the skull, lower legs, neck, muzzle, and tip of tail.
