General Breed Information

When the war between Denmark and Germany ceased, the Danish soldiers finally went home. In 1864, a group of veterans found that they were accompanied by an orange-red pointer-type female dog. They didn't know its origin, but they named the dog "Hertha." Later on, Hertha was bred with a pointer, and the offspring of this pairing resulted in the Hertha Pointer breed. Soon after the breed was formed, a breed club was founded. Hertha Pointers then became common across Denmark. In 1897, a breed standard was established, and descriptions and photographs of these dogs were included in the 1902 edition of the Les Races de Chien, a book written by Henri de Bylandt.

Hertha Pointers stand at 23 to 26 inches, and weigh between 45 and 64 pounds. These dogs have a straight and strong back, with well-developed and muscular loins. They have a broad and deep chest with well-sprung ribs. These dogs have a broad head and a medium length muzzle. Their medium-sized eyes are chestnut in colour, and their nose is black. The teeth of these dogs meet in either scissors or level bite. They have muscular hind legs with well-bent hocks and stifles. The forelegs of the Hertha Pointers are strong and straight, and their feet of these dogs are flat and round. The short and fine coat of these dogs is orange and yellow in colour, with small white markings on their chest, tail tip, muzzle, and feet.
