General Breed Information

The Guatemalan Bull Terrier is a dog breed that is said to have been in existence since the 1920s. It is believed that Dalmatians, Boxers, and English Bull Terriers were part of the foundation for this breed, but the mix was done randomly and the breed was only defined during the 1930s. The Gallusser family in Guatemala is credited with being pioneers of this breed because the family was already breeding these dogs since 1930. Today, this breed is more widely known as the Dogo Guatemalteco. There are efforts to get this breed to be recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Guatemalan Bull Terriers may stand from 22 to 24 inches tall and their weight falls in the range of 55 to 79 pounds. The larger strain of this breed can reach up to 27.5 inches and 121 pounds. These dogs are rugged, with a thick skin and a dense, smooth coat. They have a cropped tail, and their ears may either be cropped or left naturally. These dogs are white, but they can also sport black patches on their eyes. They may also have markings on their head.

In Guatemala, these dogs must have certain qualities. As guard dogs, Guatemalan Bull Terriers should not want to be touched by strangers. In case the dog tries to bite the judge in a show ring, that behavior is completely acceptable because it shows that the dog has the right temperament.
