General Breed Information
The Griffon Nivernais is one of the oldest French Hounds, with a history that can be traced back to the 13th century. Dogs of this breed were the favorite of Louis IX. These dogs are said to have come from the Balkans to settle in the Nivernais district located in central France. The exact breeds used for creating the Griffon Nivernais are not known, but it is theorized that Phoenician sighthound types and Eastern-type herding or water dogs may have been part of this breed's development. Today, the Griffon Nivernais is used for hunting small game and can withstand long hours doing hard work. These dogs are used across France and have even been exported to several countries such as the United States, Greece, and Canada, where they are used for hunting bear.
The Griffon Nivernais has a height that ranges from 21 to 24 1/2 inches and a weight that falls between 50 and 55 pounds. Dogs of this breed have a hardy build. They have a long coat that is bushy, rough, and hard. The acceptable coat colours for the Griffon Nivernais include dark gray, wolf gray, blue gray, black and tan, and tawny.
