General Breed Information

The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is a descendant of the Saintongeois breed, which lived in the Midi region of France but is now extinct. The Grand Gascon Saintongeois was developed during the mid-1800s by Joseph de Carayon-Latour, who was the owner of the only Saintongeois specimens that survived the French Revolution. He mated these Saintongeois hounds with the Grand Bleu de Gascogne to create the Grand Gascon Saintongeois. This breed is used for hunting large game such as roe deer. Dogs of this breed can be found in the southwest region of France, but it is rare and is in danger of extinction.

The height of the Grand Gascon Saintongeois ranges from 25 to 28 inches, and its weight is approximately 77 pounds. Dogs of this breed are large hounds that have a strong, elongated head. They have strong, white teeth that meet in a scissors bite. Their eyes are somewhat deep set and dark-coloured. These dogs have a black nose and thin ears. The shoulders of these dogs are sloping and well-muscled, and they have strong forelegs. The hind legs of these dogs are straight and level, their hocks are set on low, and neither turn in nor out. These dogs have a weather-resistant, smooth coat that is profuse and strong, and is not too fine or too short. These dogs are predominantly white, with speckles or flecks and black body patches.
