General Breed Information

The Gran Mastin de Borinquen is the only dog breed that is native to Puerto Rico. This breed was created using Latin American Molossers, Spanish War Mastiffs, and traditional island dogs. In 1979, the La Sociedad Cynologica Caribena established the Gran Mastin de Borinquen as an internationally recognized rare breed. The ancestry of this breed is rooted in the history of the Spanish Conquest in Latin America and the Caribbean. These dogs are courageous, loyal, and noble. In fact, many specimens died because of protecting their masters during the Spanish-Indian Wars.

The Gran Mastin de Borinquen is a large dog with a robust build. Dogs of this breed have a broad skull and a moderately long muzzle. Their nasal bridge is straight and their nose is large and black. They have strong upper and lower jaws, and their teeth meet in a scissors bite. The eyes of these dogs are fairly small and are dark brown in colour. They also have relatively small ears that are set high and hang close to their cheeks. Their neck is muscular and they have a high tail that tapers to the end and reaches close to their hocks. These dogs have moderately sloping shoulders, straight forearms, and well-developed hind legs. Their short to medium coat is hard and dense. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include fawn, black, bone white, or brindle. They may also have white markings on their head, legs, chest, or tail.
