General Breed Information
The French Tricolour Hound is a variety of the French Hound breed, which is descended from various French breeds. This variety was created only in 1957 and was produced by crossing the French Hound with the Anglo-French Tricolour Hound. Other breeds used for the creation of the French Tricolour Hound include the Billy, the Poitevin, and perhaps the Blue Gascony Hound. In 1965, the breed standard for the French Tricolour Hound was established.
French Tricolour Hounds have a fairly large head with a slightly domed skull. Their nose bridge is slightly curved, and their flews cover their lower lip. These dogs have a black nose and dark-coloured eyes. Their ears turn slightly and reach almost the base of their nose when outstretched. The body of these dogs is powerful, with a chest that is longer than it is wide. French Tricolour Hounds also have slightly rounded rips and a tail that is fairly long and carried gracefully. The hair of these dogs lies close to their body. The dense coat of these dogs is white and fawn with a black mantle. They can also have wolf grey hair. These dogs have a height that ranges from 23 to 28 inches and a weight that is approximately 66 pounds.
