General Breed Information
The French Pointing Dog is a descendant of the Spanish Pointing Dog. French Pointing Dogs are said to have been in existence since the 17th century. These dogs also go by the name of Charles X Pointer. The French Pointing Dog is also believed to be the ancestor of various continental pointers. There are two types of French Pointing Dogs, the Gascony type and the Pyrenees type. The Gascony type is calm and solidly built, while the the Pyrenees type is lighter and smaller, but very muscular. In 1919, a breed club for the French Pointing Dog was started in France.
French Pointing Dogs have a strong body with a broad, long chest and rounded ribs. Their loin is short and muscular, and they have a fairly long neck. The head of these dogs is fairly large, but not too heavy. They have an almost flat skull with a slight stop and a wide nose bridge that is sometimes slightly convex. These dogs have medium length ears that have rounded tips. Their eyes may be brown or dark yellow in colour. French Pointing Dogs have a coat that is dense and thick, with finer hair on their ears and head. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include chestnut and chestnut and white. They may also have lots of spots or fawn markings above their eyes, or on their flews and legs.
