General Breed Information
The Danish Broholmer is a dog breed that originated in Denmark. Dogs of this breed have been existing since the Middle Ages, when they were used for hunting. Later on, they were utilized as guard dogs for large manors and farms. By the end of the 18th century, Danish Broholmers were already breeding pure and were increasing in number. Credit for this is given to Sehested of Broholm, from whom the breed has gotten its name. The Second World War nearly wiped out the breed, but committed people tried to bring it back by organizing "The Society for Reconstruction of the Broholmer Breed" in 1975. The Danish Kennel Club supported the organization and both began to work on increasing the numbers of the Danish Broholmer.
Danish Broholmers are large, mastiff-type dogs that have a rectangular build. These dogs have a wide and massive head. Their chest is deep and broad. When the dog is at rest, the head is carried low and stooping, and the tail is handing down, but when the dog is moving, the tail is carried high. When the dog becomes aroused or alert, it carries its head higher. The coat of these dogs is short and lies close to their skin. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include yellow with a black mask, black, and golden red. They may also have white markings on their feet, chest, and on the tip of their tail.
These dogs can live for around 6 to 11 years.
