Group

Origin / History The Dakotah Shepherd is a relatively new breed that is still undergoing development. This breed is created and being developed by Triple M Kennel and the Dakota Shep Foundation. Breeds such as the Kelpie, Border Collie, and Heeler were used to create the Dakotah Shepherd. The goal of breeders was to create an ultimate farm dog. They then added the English Shepherd to the mix and were very pleased with the result.

It took a couple of generations before the Triple M Kennel became satisfied with the breed, though they're still trying to develop it. The Dakota Shepherd is a smart working dog that also makes a great family companion. This breed is not yet recognized by any major kennel clubs.

Appearance These dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build. They have a dark nose, and many of them sport white feet. Their tail is left naturally, same with their ears that are triangular in shape and hang down the sides of their head.

Colours These dogs are usually coloured black and tan, although they can come in shades of sable. Because these dogs are still undergoing development, they may come in different colours in the future. As of now, many dogs of this breed also have blazes. They may also have white feet and tan points above their eyes.

Temperament Dakotah Shepherds are loyal dogs and they love spending time with their family. These dogs are very smart and can be trained for various purposes. Although they are great working dogs, Dakotah Shepherds are not hyper and avid barkers. In fact, these dogs are fairly quiet. These dogs will warn their family members when there are intruders, but they are not aggressive. As puppies, they can be shy and timid, but they will eventually outgrow this phase. Human companionship is important for these dogs; they should not be left alone for long periods of time. They also get along well with children as well as with other dogs and animals. Aside from being excellent working dogs, they also make great companions.

Height and Weight Dakotah Shepherds have a height that ranges from 17 to 21 inches and a weight that falls between 35 and 50 pounds.

Common Health Problems These dogs are considered healthy and currently have no recorded genetic health problems. All ailments affecting Dakota Shepherds are those common to other dog breeds as well.

Living Conditions Dakotah Shepherds should be provided with at least a medium-sized yard where they can run around and get their daily dose of exercise.

Exercise Requirements Like other dog breeds, Dakotah Shepherds need to be taken out for long walks daily because this satisfies their primal instinct to walk. It would also be good for these dogs to play with their family members and to be allowed to run around in a large, secure area.

Training Requirements These dogs are fairly easy to train because they are eager to work and learn. They are very flexible and can be trained for agility or herding. They can also be used as therapy dogs. It would also be good for these dogs to be socialized well at an early age.

Life Expectancy Dakotah Shepherds are expected to live well into their teenage years.

Grooming The short to medium-length coat of these dogs do not need to be cut and are easy to groom and care for. These dogs usually shed during Spring and when the temperature is hot. Owners just need to brush the coat of their dogs occasionally and do it more frequently during the shedding season to eliminate loose and dead hairs more quickly. Bathing these dogs should be done only when necessary because frequent bathing can rid the coat off its natural oils.
