General Breed Information

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a small, primitive breed that's used in Sicily for hunting rabbits. This breed was close to being extinct, but was revived during the early 1900s. The first breed standard was written in 1939 and updated in 1956. It was also in 1956 that the breed club was established in Italy. It is believed that this breed has existed in Italy for approximately 2,500 years now. Dogs of this breed can be found across Western Europe, the United States, Scandinavia, and Russia.

The Cirneco dell'Etna looks like a miniature Pharaoh Hound. The differences between the two breeds lie in their tail shape, ear set, and colour markings. The Cirneco dell'Etna has triangular prick ears. Dogs of this breed also have a long, pointed muzzle. According to the breed standard, males dogs of this breed have a maximum height of 19.69 inches, while females have a maximum height of 18.11 inches. These dogs have a weight that falls between 22 and 26 pounds. The short, harsh, and glossy coat of these dogs can be any shade of fawn with markings of white on their chest. These dogs may also be white or white with markings that are orange in colour. They may also come in colours such as fawn with acceptable white markings on the chest.

These dogs can live for around 12 to 14 years.
