General Breed Information

The Central Asian Ovtcharka is a breed that has a 4,000 year old history. Not much is known about the specifics of this breed's origin, but many people believe that the Tibetan Mastiff plays a big role in the development of these dogs. Central Asian Ovtcharkas are found in particular areas of Iran, Russia, and from Afghanistan to Siberia. For centuries, these dogs have served as protectors of flocks and herdsmen from thieves and intruders. These dogs are rarely found outside the Central Asian Republic, and they're becoming less popular in Russia because of the larger demand for the bigger Caucasian Sheepdog.

Central Asian Ovtcharkas are mastiff-type dogs with a muscular build. Their body is a little longer than its height, and they are big-boned, with a wide back and a large chest. They have powerfully built shoulders and limbs. The tail and the ear of these dogs can be docked. Their facial skin is very thick and may have wrinkles. These dogs have a dense coat that may be long or short. Male dogs of this breed have a height of 27 to 32 inches and a weight of 121 to 176 pounds. Females have a height of 24 to 27 inches and a weight of 88 to 143 pounds.

Dogs of this breed can live for around 12 to 14 years. The common health problems associated with this breed include hip and elbow problems, as well as bloating.
