General Breed Information

The Carpathian Sheepdog is a breed that originated in Romania, specifically in the Carpathian mountains. Dogs of this breed are the product of a selection of an endemic breed that can be found in the Danube and Carpathian areas. Carpathian Sheepdogs were originally bred to be working dogs. The first breed standard was written in 1934 by The National Zootechnical Institute. It has since then been updated and modified. In March 2002, the technical commission of the Asociatia Chinologica Romana also adapted the standard, relying on the pattern provided by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Male dogs of this breed have a height of 25 to 29 inches, while females have a height of 23 to 26 inches. These dogs are rugged in appearance, and female Carpathian Sheepdogs look distinctly more feminine than their male counterparts. The head of these dogs is strong and wolf-like, with a wide forehead. They have a large, black nose and almond-shaped eyes that are dark brown in colour. These dogs have a straight, bushy tail, and a plush coat. The acceptable coat colours for this breed includes varying shades of sand. They may also have white spots, as well as darker or lighter markings.

These dogs can live for around 12 to 14 years.
