General Breed Information

The Cao de Fila de Sao Miguel, also referred to as the Sao Miguel Cattle Dog or Azores Cattle Dog, is a breed that originated in Sao Miguel, which is the largest island in the Azores. When the Azorean islands were discovered in 1427, the land was covered with lush vegetation that was very difficult to penetrate. This is why the sailors of Prince Henry left cattle on the islands. In 1439, the cattle had become abundant, creating a need for a cattle dog to control the herd. The Fila de Terceira was initially used, but it is now extinct. It is believed that the Fila de Terceira was bred with molossers and the resulting product became the Cao de Fila de Sao Miguel. This breed was granted recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1995.

Male dogs of this breed have a height of 19 1/2 to 24 inches and a weight of 55 to 90 pounds. Females are slightly smaller, having a height of 19 to 23 inches and a weight of 45 to 80 pounds. The Cao de Fila de Sao Miguel is a medium-sized dog with a square-shaped head. They have dark brown eyes, and their ears are usually docked. Their coat is short-haired and can come in a wide variety of colours such as gray and reddish-yellow. They may also have white markings on their chin, feet, and chest.

The average life span of these dogs is approximately 15 years.
