General Breed Information

The Cao da Serra da Estrela is a descendant of herd-guarding dogs in the Serra da Estrela in Portugal. There are no written records documenting the early history of this breed, but it is theorized that Romans may have brought these dogs with them when they conquered the Iberian Peninsula. Another theory is that these dogs may have been brought by the Visigoths. The first tentative breed standard was written in 1922, but the first official breed standard was published in 1933. Today, the Cao da Serra da Estrela works as a guard dog in Portugal. Many individuals have also chosen to get this dog as a family pet because of its intelligence, loyalty, and alertness.

Male dogs of this breed have a height of 25 1/2 to 28 1/2 inches. Females are 24 1/2 to 27 inches tall. These dogs come in two coat types: long and short. The acceptable coat colours include fawn, brindle, and wolf grey. They may also have white markings on their underside, chest, feet, or tail, although these are undesirable. These dogs have well-muscled thighs and well-muscled loins. The forelegs of these dogs are straight and well-muscled, with strong, round bone. They have moderately sloping upper arms and shoulders. Their head is long, with a slightly rounded, broad skull. Their amber eyes are medium-sized, oval, and have a calm, intelligent expression. Their muzzle is moderately tapered, with a large black nose at its tip. These dogs have very strong teeth that meet in a complete scissors bite.
