General Breed Information

The Cao da Serra de Aires is a breed that is nearly a hundred years old. It is believed that this breed is a descendant of the Briards that were brought to Portugal by Count de Castro Guimaraes. The Briards most likely bred with various local mountain dogs. The Cao de Serra de Aires served as a companion for poor shepherds in the southern areas of Portugal. By the 1970s, however, this breed became in danger of extinction. Fortunately, breeders revived the breed and middle-class owners are now keeping this breed alive. These dogs are not popular outside their native country. The official breed standard for these dogs was written in 1930. Organizations such as the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, Continental Kennel Club, National Kennel Club, and American Canine Registry all recognize this breed.

These dogs have a height of 16 to 22 inches and a weight of 26 to 40 pounds. They are medium-sized working dogs with a deep, long chest and well-muscled, strong limbs. The head of these dogs is wide and sturdy. Their ears are usually left natural, hanging down the sides of their face. They have dark eyes and strong jaws. The coat of these dogs is long and either slightly wavy or and smooth. The acceptable coat colours for this breed include chestnut, fawn, black, yellow-red, and gray. They may also have white hairs interspersed through their coat.

When properly cared for, these dogs can live for 12 to 13 years.
