General Breed Information

The Canarian Warren Hound is a breed that is originally from the Canary Islands. It is believed that these dogs were brought to the Canary Islands by the Greeks, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, and the Egyptians. This breed is considered to be among the oldest dog breeds in the world. Its remains were even found in tombs of various pharaohs. Canarian Warren Hounds were bred to hunt rabbits, but are now primarily being kept as pets. This breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

These dogs are 21 to 25 inches in height, and they weigh approximately 55 pounds. They have a head that is long and shaped like a blunt cone, with a flat skull that is longer than its width. Their muzzle is broad, with a flesh-colored nose at its tip. Canarian Warren Hounds have fairly large ears that stand erect, and almond-shaped eyes that are small, slanted, and amber in colour. They have a well-muscled neck, a well-developed chest, and oval ribs. Their tail is round and is usually white. The coat of these dogs is short, dense, and smooth, and usually comes in shades of red and white.

These dogs are expected to live for around 12 to 13 years.
