General Breed Information

The Cajun Squirrel Dog is a feist-type breed developed by Robert Kemmer by crossing Bounce Mountain Feists with Kemmer Stock Mountain Curs. These dogs were used for hunting squirrels and raccoons, hence its name. Calvin Boutte, who was nicked the Cajun, continued developing the breed. In his honor, the breed adopted "Cajun" as part of its name.

Cajun Squirrel Dogs may be small or medium-sized, with a height that ranges from 12 to 18 inches and a weight that falls between 20 and 30 pounds. These dogs have a very stocky build, but are very rarely flabby. They are similar in appearance to Labrador Retrievers, only smaller. The eyes of Cajun Squirrel Dogs are dark brown or black in colour and have an outline of pink or red. They usually have a brown or black nose, and ears that are somewhat long and fold over at the ends. The coat of these dogs are medium length and are usually yellow in colour. Other acceptable coat colours include red and brindle.

These dogs need little grooming. They should just be brushed occasionally, although more frequent brushing is needed during shedding season. Bathing these dogs should be done only when necessary. These dogs have no known health problems, but because of their keen sense of smell, they may lose interest in food when they catch cold.

When properly taken care of, Cajun Squirrel Dogs can live for around 12 to 14 years.
