General Breed Information

The Bouvier de Ardennes originated in the Belgian Ardennes. Dogs of this breed were used as cattle drovers, and only the most hardworking dogs were kept and used for herding cattle, sheep, horses, and pigs. These dogs were also used for tracking wild boar and deer. During the first and second World War, these dogs became poachers' dogs. When farms started disappearing in Ardennes during the 20th century, the Bouvier de Ardennes decreased in number as well. In 1985, some specimens of this breed were discovered, and breeders started re-establishing the breed. In 2006, this breed gained recognition from the United Kennel Club.

The Bouvier de Ardennes is medium-sized, short, and thick set. Dogs of this breed are well-muscled and compact, and they have a tousled, harsh coat. They have a relatively short, massive head with a goat-like beard. Their muzzle is short and broad, and their eyes are dark in colour. These dogs have a broad, deep chest with well-sprung ribs and untucked belly. They are either naturally tailless or their tails are docked. The double coat of these dogs is dense and completely weatherproof. The coat shouldn't be trimmed. Any colour except white is acceptable for this breed.
