Group

Origin / History The Biewer, also known as the Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon, and the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier. This breed was developed by Mr. Werner Biewer and his wife, Mrs. Gertrud Biewer, in 1984. To develop the Biewer, they bred two traditional yorkies, the "Fru Fru von Friedheck" and the "Darling von Friedheck", both of which had the same recessive piebald gene. Mr. Biewer began showing the Biewer breed in 1988. After that, he worked on getting the dogs recognized as a separate breed.

Mr. Biewer passed away in 1997, but by then the Biewer has already been recognized as a breed. The American Rare Breed Association bestowed recognition on the Biewer in December 2007, and the Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA) was accepted as the national breed club. The American Kennel Club, however, has yet to give the Biewer recognition as a breed. The BTCA is currently working on changing the breed standard of the Biewer.

Appearance The Biewer looks like a long-haired toy terrier with hair that hangs evenly down the side of its body, from the base of its skull to the end of its tail. Dogs of this breed must be neat and compact. These dogs have their tail carried up. The hair on their body can be long enough to reach the ground and must be straight, not woolly. These dogs don't have an undercoat, and their hair has a fine silky texture.

Colours Acceptable coat colours for Biewers include black, white, blue-white and broken or solid blue. These dogs often sport white and brown markings on their face and chest. The head of these dogs must feature symmetrical markings that are gold, white and blue in colour.

Temperament Although Biewers are small, they are always eager for adventure. These dogs are highly energetic, clever, loyal and brave. Dogs of this breed are affectionate with their master. They need owners who know how to be their leader. If not trained properly, Biewers can become overprotective, demanding and dependent. They are, however, excellent watchdogs. When trained and socialized properly, Biewers are loving and sweet, and can get along well with children.

Height and Weight Dogs of this breed have a height of approximately 8.5 inches and a weight of about seven pounds.

Common Health Problems These dogs are generally healthy and do not exhibit any genetic health problems.

Living Conditions Dogs of this breed are fairly active indoors and can be kept inside apartments. They will do well even without a yard, but owners must make sure that these dogs get adequate exercise every day.

Exercise Requirements Biewers are active dogs and they must be given time to play in a large fenced-in yard every day. Aside from that, though, these dogs should still be taken on long walks daily.

Training Requirements Biewers can be quite difficult to housebreak. It's important for owners of these dogs to know how to train them well. Owners should make use of firm but gentle training methods, and they must be able to show the dogs that humans are the leaders of the pack. If the owners let the dogs have their way, Biewers may become overprotective, demanding, dependent, and neurotic. These dogs may also develop jealous behaviors and become snappish if frightened, over-teased, or surprised

Life Expectancy Biewers have a life span of approximately 12 to 15 years.

Grooming When kept as companions, most owners prefer to have their Biewers with a "perpetual puppy cut", which means that the hairs of the dog don't necessarily have to be floor-length. The hairs of Biewers should be combed with a wire comb at least once a week, and a bath every two to three weeks should suffice to keep the coat healthy. If the Biewer is supposed to be for the show ring, though, the owner must make sure that the coat of the dog reaches the ground.
