General Breed Information

The Berger du Languedoc was originally developed in France. Thought to be nearly extinct, it has been dropped from the registry of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Dogs of this breed may also go by the names Farou and Cevennes Shepherd. The Berger du Languedoc mainly functions as a herding dog.

Dogs of this breed have a height that ranges from 15 1/2 to 20 1/2 inches, and their weight falls between 20 and 34 pounds. These dogs have a straight back and a deep chest with lightly sprung ribs. Their head is well-proportioned, and their skull is slightly arched and fairly broad. These dogs have medium-sized, dark eyes, and naturally erect ears that are set wide apart. The medium-sized muzzle of these dogs tapers to a point. Their nose is black and their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. These dogs have feet that are short and round, with hard pads and dark nails. They have a short coat that can sometimes be medium length. Acceptable coat colours include black and tan, and shades of fawn.

These dogs get along well with children and other animals. When properly taken care of, they may live for around 10 to 14 years.
