General Breed Information

The Berger des Picard is considered to be the oldest of the French shepherd breeds. This breed arrived in the Pas de Calais and the Picardie with the Celts during 800 AD. This breed is named after the Picardie region in northeastern France. It was in 1863 that dogs of this breed made their first appearance in a show in France. Some think that this breed is a descendant of the Beauceron and the Briard, but others theorize that the Berger des Picard has the same origin as the Dutch Shepherd and the Belgian Shepherd. After the two World Wars, this breed became in danger of extinction, and although its numbers has increased since then, dogs of this breed are still fairly rare nowadays. This breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club.

The Berger des Picard is 21 1/2 to 26 inches tall and 50 to 70 pounds heavy. Dogs of this breed are medium-sized, with a well-muscled body. These dogs have high set ears that stand erect on their head. The coat of these dogs is made up of thick, strong hair. Acceptable coat colours for this breed include blue-grey, red-grey, light fawn, dark fawn, grey, and grey-black. They may also have white patches on their feet.

These dogs are expected to live for around 13 to 14 years. Common health problems for this breed include hip dysplasia and eye problems.
