General Breed Information

The exact origin of the Belgian Shorthaired Pointer is unknown, although it is theorized that this breed is probably related to the French Braques. Dogs of this breed are very rare, and it may be possible that they are extinct already because no registrations have been made for many years. This breed is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the Continental Kennel Club.

Belgian Shorthaired Pointers have a rather broad head with a stop that is less defined. Their eyes may be dark yellow, amber, or chestnut in colour, and their ears are moderately long and set at eye level. These dogs have a medium-sized muzzle that is well proportioned to their head. Their nose is black, and their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. The legs of these dogs are quite long and are built more for power rather than speed. These dogs have round and short feet. The height of Belgian Shorthaired Pointers ranges from 23 1/2 to 28 inches, and their weight falls between 52 and 61 pounds. The dense, short, and thick coat of these dogs is white with large brown patches. The heavy ticking on the coat also makes the dog look gray.
