General Breed Information
The Shih-poo is a cross between a Poodle and a Shih-Tzu making it a hybrid dog, recognised by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC)
Shih-poo coats are very soft and can be either straight or slightly curly and do not shed making them suitable for some people who may be allergic to other dogs. The coat requires moderate care, ideally being groomed about once a week and clipped every 2-3 months. Coat colours vary with black & white being the most common however black, and gold & white are not uncommon.
Shih-poos are friendly, happy little dogs that make excellent family pets always ready to interact and play with humans including children. They are very intelligent dogs that require lots of fun and stimulation, eager to please and obedient they respond well to firm but kindly training. While Shih-poos are content to be indoors with their family it's important for their physical and mental health that they get plenty of exercise ideally having vigorous walks and//or runs at least once a day.
Depending on which Shih-tzu and Poodles were crossed to make the Shih-poo. Shih-poos weigh between 7 to 14 pounds and have an average height of between 8 to 12 inches. It's possible to find Shih-poos that are much smaller than average. Owners need to take care to ensure their Shih-poo does not over eat and regular ear checks should be undertaken as this is a known problem area for this breed, also the Shih-tzu's nails will require regular clipping. Well cared for Shi-poos can live for between 13 and 17 years.
