General Breed Information

The Shepadoodle is a cross between the German Shepherd and the Standard Poodle therefore it is a hybrid dog and not a purebred dog. With both the German Shepherd and Poodle being renowned for their intelligence it is no surprise that Shepadoodles are also intelligent dogs and Shepadoodles benefit greatly from early socialisation and training; they are quick to learn what their owners are asking and are also excellent at sensing when their owners are displeased.

Depending on the coat type Shepadoodles shedding varies from dog to dog so there is no guarantee that these dogs will be low shedders. Shepadoodle dog coats range from the moderately short thick, dense double coat of the GSD to the curly, longer, silky hair of the Poodle and come in a wide range of colors including black, browns, grays and multi colours. These dogs need grooming on a regular basis to keep the coat looking its best.

Shepadoodles are energetic dogs and being quite big dogs it's essential that they have plenty of time outside to run, explore and use up some of their energy. These are not good dogs to be kept inside for long periods. These dogs make a good pet for families and despite their larger size are playful rather than rough or aggressive however they should be supervised around younger children. They make excellent watch dogs.

On average Shepadoodles weigh between 60 to 85 pounds and have an average height of between 15 to 25 inches. Shepadoodles are known to be fit, robust dogs with an average life span of between 11-13 years of age however hip problems, arthritis and cataracts may become a problem in the dogs later years.
