General Breed Information

The Labradoodle is considered a hybrid or designer dog that was created by crossing the Poodle with the Labrador Retriever. It was in 1989 that the Labradoodle was developed by Wally Conron, an Australian breeder. The aim was to create a dog that would have the Labrador's trainability and the Poodle's low-shedding coat. Today, dogs of this breed are used as guide dogs, assistance dogs, and therapy dogs. They also make great family dogs. The Labradoodle is also recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and the American Canine Hybrid Club.

The Labradoodle is still a developing breed with no breed standard, so their appearance varies greatly. The coat of these dogs can be soft or wiry, and may be curly, wavy, or straight. The coat colours for this breed include white, gold, cream, brown, black, red, and apricot. Some specimens of this breed do shed, but they shed less than Labrador Retrievers do. Owners of these dogs should brush the coat regularly and bathe their Labradoodles when necessary.
