Group Gundogs (KC)
Origin /
History The Gordon Setter was first developed in 17th-century Scotland and it was later popularized by Alexander, who was the fourth Duke of Gordon and Richmond. The Gordon Setter was bred to be a fine dog for the sportsman - the duke decided to mix the Black and Tan Setter, a gun dog, a Bloodhound, and even a Collie. With the four kinds of dogs, the Duke hoped to create a companion that would have the right amount of stamina and endurance for hunts, as well as a keen scenting ability for fowl.
Daniel Webster and George Blunt then imported this sportsman's dog to the United States in 1842, and it was exhibited during Newcastle Town Hall, England's first dog show in 1859.
The Gordon Setter stood out among the rest of the setters because of its unique abilities. Other setters are quick to finding birds, but the Gordon Setter was successful in finding more birds. The scenting ability of the Gordon Setter is more accurate and precise. Aside from that, this setter breed could also endure longer hot periods without water, making it the ideal hunting companion.
Appearance The Gordon Setter stands elegantly due to its tall and slender build. The chest of this dog is deep but the entire physique of the Golden Setter seems to be elongated – it has a graceful neck, and a long head with a pronounced nose. The muzzle of the Gordon Setter is long and squared off. Hanging by the Gordon Setter's head are long, pointy ears. Its soft and glossy coat is usually straight but sometimes wavy and it stretches all the way to the feathered tail, the cat-like feet, and the arched toes.
Colours The Gordon Setter comes in the typical black and tan combination, but it may also come in just red or tan.
Temperament The Gordon Setter is best known for its obedience and loyalty. A highly intelligent dog, the Gordon Setter is wiling to be trained. It exhibits strength, energy, and alertness. These qualities make the Gordon Setter, not just reliable companion during hunts, but also a trustworthy pet. This dog also shows a lot of patience, but an owner must remember to take this dog on walks frequently because the Gordon Setter has the tendency to become overly hyperactive if left in a sedentary lifestyle.
Height and
Weight The Gordon Setter stands anywhere between 24 to 27 inches, and can weigh in at 45 to 80 pounds.
Common Health
Problems The Gordon Setter is generally a healthy creature, but it can become vulnerable to hip dysplasia. This type of dog may also be vulnerable to gastric torsion, hypothyroidism, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy.
Living Conditions The apartment life is not suited to the Gordon Setter. Instead, an owner of this type of dog must have a yard where the Gordon Setter is free to run around. Gordon Setters like to explore their surroundings, so it is recommended that one's yard be fenced.
Exercise
Requirements The Gordon Setter needs a moderate amount of exercise. An owner may take out this dog for a brisk walk daily. This type of dog has the tendency to be restless, so letting it run free in a fenced area can be beneficial too.
Training Requirements The Gordon Setter is actually a very easy dog to train, but one must start doing this right away. Once the Gordon Setter matures, it can be very stubborn and set on its ways. This dog does not respond well to force, so an owner must be consistent with a loving and positive approach.
Life Expectancy The Gordon Setter has a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years.
Grooming To groom a Gordon Setter, one must keep a regular brushing and combing schedule. An owner must always check the coat for tangles and burrs. The ears must be constantly checked, and the excess hair under the ears must be trimmed so that infections can be avoided. Bathe the Gordon Setter only when needed.
