Group Terriers (KC)

Origin / History The Cesky Terrier originated in Czechoslovakia, its existence borne out of the efforts of Frantisek Horak, a Czechoslovakian dog breeder. Dogs of this breed are mixtures of Scottish and Sealyham Terriers. There are also some theories stating that there may be other terriers included in this breed and one of them may be the Dandie Dinmont. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale bestowed recognition upon the Cesky Terrier in 1963. It was only in 1987 that some of these dogs were imported to the United States.

This breed was originally meant for hunting vermin in their dens, particularly foxes and rats. This is why Horak tried to create a terrier that has a narrower chest and head as well as softer coats, so it would be easier for the dogs to get into burrows. Nowadays, these dogs serve as good trackers, hunters, watchdogs, and guard dogs.

Appearance These dogs bear similarities to Sealyham Terriers. Cesky Terriers have short legs and are moderately long. They possess long heads, mustaches, bushy beards, and eyebrows. They have compact bodies that are not heavy. They have eyes that are either brown or yellow in color. Their ears are triangular and fold forward close to their long heads. Their coats are silky and wavy.

Colours The coats of these dogs usually sport shades of gray, gray-blue with tan, yellow, white, or light coffee, although the light coffee coat color is rare. When born, these dogs are black, and their coat lightens in color as they mature. All these colors may or may not come with markings of white.

Temperament Cesky Terriers are protective, sporty, calm, and playful. They are sweet, happy, and they love being with people. They get along great with children, and they can even be sociable with strangers. They can also get along well with other household animals. Although it is a sociable dog, it's feistiness and fearlessness make it a good house guard. They can also be great traveling companions. These dogs are loyal to their families and obedient to their masters.

Height and Weight They are 25 - 30 cm in height and 6 - 10 Kg in weight.

Common Health Problems This breed is a very healthy and hardy one that does not show any susceptibility to major hereditary diseases. However, they can be afflicted with Scottie Cramp, which is a minor problem that causes these dogs to move awkwardly. Fortunately, though, this condition is neither life threatening nor painful.

Living Conditions Since these dogs can be moderately active even when kept indoors, they can live inside apartments. They can also do well even without a yard.

Exercise Requirements Although these dogs can live inside apartments, they still need their daily dose of exercise. They would appreciate it if their owners take them to play and run through open spaces or wooded areas. They should also be taken for long walks daily and they make for good jogging companions.

Training Requirements These dogs are intelligent, eager to please, and obedient, thus making them easier to train than other terrier breeds. Owners must employ consistent training using positive reinforcement methods as these dogs won't respond positively to harsh training. They should be socialized properly at a young age to make sure that they grow up to be well-mannered dogs.

Life Expectancy The life spans of these dogs range from around 12 to 15 years.

Grooming Coats of these dogs must undergo regular trimming, although the hair on their legs, stomach, and face should be left long. Dogs that are intended to be just pets need to undergo trimming for at least four times in a year while show dogs need to undergo trimming more frequently. Their ear passages should also be devoid of loose hair and the excess hair between the pads of their feet should also be clipped. Owners should also take the time to brush their dogs' coats for at least two times in a week in order to prevent tangles from forming.
