Group Hound Dogs (KC)

Origin / History The origins of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne can be traced back to the Basque region of Gascogne in France. Dogs of this breed are descendants of large blue hounds in France which were used for hunting boars, wolves, and deer. There are some theories stating that the short height of the breed is due to the crossing of the breeds Grand Bleu and Saintongeois Basset. There are others, though, who believe that the Basset Bleu's shortness was because of the Grand Bleu's natural mutation, which was brought about by selective breeding.

At the start of the twentieth century, however, there were so few Basset Bleus around that the breed was said to be on the brink of extinction. It was fortunate that dog breeder Alain Bourbon started a breeding program that rescued the breed. This breed is rarely found outside of France and is not recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Appearance These dogs bear resemblance to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne because of their possession of delicate markings and a slight crown. Dogs of this breed have long forefaces that are strong-looking. They sport eyes that are rich brown in color and has a look of gentle expression. They have low set ears that reach down to a length that is below the tip of their noses.

Colours Coats of these dogs have white background that has black mottling, which gives them an appearance of being blue-colored. They have tan markings on their heads, under their tails, and on their legs. They also have large black patches on their bodies.

Temperament These dogs are affectionate and sociable, and usually possess very stable temperaments. They need to be included in many activities with the family because it needs to bond with people. Without activity and bonding, it may get bored and behavioral problems may result from this boredom. Dogs of this breed adapt easily to different environments and lifestyles. They do well with children and love playing with them. Although these dogs aren't natural watchdogs, they will bark at strangers. These dogs are sensitive and intelligent, and are good companion dogs for those who are understanding of the dogs' hound instincts.

Height and Weight 30 - 38 cm in height and 16 - 20 Kg in weight.

Common Health Problems Although there are no known hereditary disorders for Basset Bleus, they may be prone to being afflicted with gastric dilitation volvulus. They can be susceptible to bloating as well.

Living Conditions These dogs can adapt to living both in the country and in the city. They can be kept indoors, but owners must make sure that they are provided with enough activity so as not to become bored. Since they have short coats, though, they can be sensitive to cold temperatures.

Exercise Requirements Since these dogs can develop behavioral problems when bored and not given enough activity, owners must make sure that they are giving their dogs adequate exercise. The dogs should be taken out for at least two long walks daily. Puppies, however, should not be made to walk very far as doing so may cause damage to their joints and bones. Dogs of this breed, being the scent-hounds that they are, will be great as hiking companions.

Training Requirements It is necessary for dogs of this breed to undergo basic obedience training to make sure that they would be pleasant at home. Positive reinforcement methods should be used and the owner must make certain to cultivate mutual respect between him and the dog. Socializing the dog to as many places, sounds, sights, animals, and people as possible at an early age will be good, as this will ensure that the dog grows up to be well-adjusted, confident, and well-mannered.

Life Expectancy These dogs are expected to live for as long as 12 to 14 years.

Grooming Dogs of this breed are easy to groom. The owners just need to comb or brush the dogs' coats occasionally in order to remove loose hairs. The dogs' claws must be kept short by filing, and their ears must always be clean. Owners must use good quality ear cleaners to clean out their dogs' ear passages.
