Origin / History The American Cocker Spaniel originated from the English Cocker Spaniels in the U.S.A. Around the time of the World Wars the English Cockers in the U.S have evolved differently from there English counterparts, so in 1945 the breeds were separated.

Appearance Short broad head and deep square muzzle. Long hanging, lobe shaped ear. Square body with broad chest and well sprung ribs with fairly short and strong boned legs and round feet.

Colours Solid black, red, cream, buff, sable. Particoloured black and tan, roan, and white with any accepted colour with or without tan markings.

Temperament Active, lively, playful, curious.

Height and Weight 34 - 39 cm in height and 11-13 Kg in weight. Females are generally smaller in size than the males.

Common Health Problems Its important to choose puppies of this breed from good healthy stock. They may suffer from various hereditary problems including cataracts, hip malformation. May also be prone to ear infections and skin problems.

Living Conditions Adaptable breed which will make a home in either a country setting or a town apartment. Would prefer life in the country, but if living in an apartment will need extra walks and visits to the local park to burn off some energy.

Exercise Requirements A very active small breed which needs a good long walk a day or a couple of shorter length brisk walks. Will also enjoy play time in the garden and certainly off the lead up the park.

Training Requirements A relative easy breed to train. They do best with firm but gentle fun training sessions.

Life Expectancy 12 - 13 years.

Grooming Requires alot of grooming, especially if any ideas of showing. Many owners have the coat clipped every couple of months to reduced the weekly grooming time.
